Confused by the Trinity? Learn the very basics of God's triune nature, and why it matters so much.

God Is Three Persons Who Have Existed for All Eternity

These three persons are all equally powerful, wise, and good. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit exist together in perfect harmony as God. The three persons have always existed. The Father has always been Father to the Son. The Son has always been Son to the Father. They have always been united with the Spirit.

God Is a Being of Ultimate Love

The Trinity demonstrates that love is at the root of everything. Before anything existed, God existed in a loving relationship. To say that “God is love” means nothing unless God is at least two persons. If God was a single person, he could not be called a God of love until he created something. But he has always been a God of love within himself from eternity past.

The Three Persons of the Trinity Work Together

Father, Son, and Spirit work together in everything they do.

Matthew 28:19 (NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…

The entire Trinity is involved in everything God does, including his work in saving us. All three persons have different roles but they work as one. The Father is the source of everything. He sends Son into the world, in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit proceeds from the Father and Son. Jesus is the way back to the Father. The Holy Spirit is the power to get there. All are at work to give us a right relationship with God.
