"The Good Place" on Netflix is a fun show that will make you laugh. But don't take your theology from it.
Talking Points:
- The show says that you’ll find your “soulmate” in heaven. The Bible says you’re already married to your soulmate. Ephesians 5:25
- The show says that all religions get about 5% of it right. The Bible says that only Jesus is right. John 14:6
- The show says you get to heaven if your good outweighs your bad. The Bible teaches that there’s only one way to get to heaven. Romans 3:22-23
Discussion:
- Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
- What do you think most people believe about heaven today? Where do they get those views?
- What did you grow up believing about heaven? How have your views changed?
- Read Ephesians 5:25. How has the idea of “soul mates” gotten skewed in our culture? What does this passage tell us about real love?
- Read John 14:6. Why is this verse so foundational to a correct understanding of Christianity? How has the post-truth era confused even Christians? What are the consequences for not believing in absolute truth?
- How would you explain to a friend that the Bible is all true but some religions/churches can get it wrong?
- Do you picture God up in Heaven tracking your godliness? Why is it such a common belief – if our good outweighs the bad then we’re good?
- Read Romans 3:22-23. What does this say about how we get to heaven? Why is this idea offensive to some? How do you explain to people the difference between saving faith and living a life that honors God?
- Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
