Like a missile aimed at and steered toward a certain target, good parental discipline has a purpose and a desired outcome in the lives of children.
Talking Points:
- God disciplines us for a purpose and we should use that example with our kids. Hebrews 12:7, 10-11
- Discipline should always benefit our kids. It should be to teach them self-discipline, learn right from wrong and how boundaries keep them safe.
- As parents, we should have an idea of what our kids will look like when they are honoring and serving God. That’s the trajectory we aim at when we discipline them.
Discussion:
- Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
- Think about how your parents disciplined you. Was it more about fixing a pressing need, or aiming at a larger purpose? Explain.
- Tell us about a time when you disciplined your kids more for your benefit than for theirs.
- Read Hebrews 12:7. How have you seen God work in your life through the consequences for sinful acts?
- God disciplines us to create “a harvest of right living.” What are you trying to create when you discipline your children?
- Read Hebrews 12:10-11. Do you agree that to be effective, discipline has to be painful? Why or why not? What’s the boundary between discipline and abuse?
- What’s your vision for what you want your kids to turn out like? How can you shape your approach to discipline to encourage that trajectory?
- Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
