Don’t Hang Around Toxic People

The Bible makes it clear that you will be heavily influenced by the people you spend time with.

Proverbs 13:20 (MSG) Become wise by walking with the wise;  hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.

But how do you decide who a toxic person is?

Identify Toxic People

Toxic people fall into three main categories:

  1. Controlling People
  2. Corrupt People
  3. Negative People

But identifying toxic people isn’t enough. You need to know how to deal with them.

Learn How to Deal with Toxic Relationships

You will save yourself a lot of trouble if you know how to deal with toxic relationships. There are two main things to do:

  1. Set healthy boundaries.
  2. Know when to end a relationship.

There will always be toxic people around you. But you don’t have to let them ruin your life. If you listen to God, he will show you how to manage any toxic relationship.

  4. Read Proverbs 13:20. What does this verse teach us about the friends we choose? Have you ever experienced the truth of this verse in your life? Explain.
  5. Describe the three categories of toxic people. Which one do you normally attract as a friend? Why do you think that is?
  6. What are some boundaries that you might need to set with your friends?
  7. Have you ever had to end a toxic relationship with someone? How did you handle the situation? What, if anything, would you do differently now?
  8. Write a personal action step based on this conversation.
