Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

In today’s lesson, we’re learning about a time Jesus broke a rule! That doesn’t sound like something Jesus would do but he had a good reason to do it. One day, Jesus was teaching in the synagogue which was their church back then. It was the Sabbath. Now, the Sabbath was a special day. God talked about it with Moses when he gave him the 10 Commandments. The people were supposed to work for 6 days and then rest on the 7th – which was called the Sabbath. The religious leaders took this rule very seriously but they also added some of their own silly rules. God’s point for the Sabbath was to let people rest and focus on him. God’s rules always had a point. He didn’t make rules just to make rules. But, the religious leaders missed that. They made it all about rules and not about God. So, Jesus decided to challenge this idea. As he taught on the Sabbath, a crippled woman came who needed to be healed and Jesus healed her! Now, the people were praising Jesus for the miracle but the religious leader got mad because he considered healing as work. He cared more about the rule than the person. But, Jesus showed that people matter more than a rule.
