When a rich man asked Jesus how to get to heaven, it taught us all an important lesson.

One day, Jesus was teaching the people when this guy came running up to him with a question. He asked, “Jesus, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He was asking Jesus how to get to heaven. Jesus’ first answer was exactly as the guy thought. Jesus said that you need to obey the 10 commandments. Great! The rich guy was really good at following the rules. He thought he was guaranteed heaven based on his good deeds. But, Jesus wasn’t done. Then Jesus told the guy to go sell all his stuff and give his money to the poor. This is not what the rich guy wanted to hear. See, he was super wealthy and had all the money and stuff he wanted. He loved his money more than anything. Jesus was testing his real love and commitment to God. Was he willing to give up his stuff to follow Jesus or not? Sadly, the rich guy walked away from Jesus. He didn’t want to give up his stuff. He loved money more than he loved God. So kids, remember that God wants to be your first love, not your second or third. Follow Jesus with your whole heart.
