Talking Points:
- There is no explicit command in the Bible that says gambling is a sin. That doesn’t, however, mean that it isn’t sinful. Sin is not always a matter of doing something we shouldn’t, it’s also not doing something we should. James 4:17
- The Bible has much to say about trying to get rich quickly. Those who build wealth slowly and steadily are more likely to manage it well than those who come into money quickly. Proverbs 13:11, Proverbs 21:5
- We’re commanded in scripture not to be controlled by anything. Gambling can be highly addictive. 1 Corinthians 6:12
- It’s not just yourself you have to be concerned about. If you’re playing cards or betting over a round of golf, you also have to be aware of the person you’re gambling against. Is it a sin for them? Romans 14:13-14
Discussion:
- Read the talking points above as a group, including scripture references. What are your initial thoughts about these points or about the podcast lesson (see audio above)?
- Before listening to the podcast, how would you have answered the question: “is it a sin to gamble?”
- Read James 4:17. How does this verse apply to today’s topic?
- The Bible warns us against envying our neighbors. What are some ways that jealousy can ruin a relationship?
- Read Proverbs 21:5. The statistics in the podcast seem to prove this verse. Why is it important to follow this verse when it comes to financial gain? What are the practical downsides of haste for wealth?
- Would you or have you ever indulged in a form of gambling? Even if you’re not addicted, why might it be a good idea to be wary?
- What are some ways you can help someone who might be addicted to gambling, and how does that differ from other addictions (alcohol, drugs, etc.)? How does it look similar?
