It’s easy to think that we owe God or that we have a part to play in our eternal destination. Jason’s story is one of overcoming this human tendency and learning what it means to be secure in Christ alone.
Talking Points:
- Jason is a Utah native who was raised in the dominant religion of Utah. As Jason perceived it, eternity in this religion was something to be earned. It would be as good as he could make it.
- Growing up with these ideas, Jason rode a spiritual roller coaster of embracing and walking away from his faith. Even after marrying, Jason and his wife followed this pattern. Even having children did not make things “fall into place” for Jason and his family.
- Jason’s wife suggested visiting a non-denominational Christian church. They quickly saw that things were very different from what they had grown up with in their religion. When Jason heard that the Bible teaches Jesus is God (John 1:1, 14), his idea of eternity began to fall into its proper place.
- Jason realized that his eternity was guaranteed through the grace of Jesus Christ, not through how hard he was working. With a new perspective, Jason is emboldened to share the truth of God’s love and grace through trusting Christ.
Discussion:
- Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
- Have you ridden a “spiritual roller coaster” of ups and downs in your life like Jason and his wife? Are you on that roller coaster now? Explain.
- Read John 1:1,14. Do you understand that the Bible teaches Jesus is God? Why is this important?
- Read Ephesians 2:8-9. Has Jesus “fallen into place” for you like he did for Jason? Do you understand the grace of God through Christ alone? Why do these things matter?
- Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
