Step #1: Schedule it.
Mentoring doesn’t happen if you don’t put it on the schedule. Figure out a time when a phone call works for everyone, and then commit to it. Mentoring over the phone can be scheduled as a 30- to 60- minute commitment.
Step #2: Find a topic.
Mentoring over the phone works because of the tools online at pursueGOD.org. Find a topic to give your conversation some structure. Pick something that’s interesting to everyone on the call.
Step #3: FLEX.
Don’t forget to use the simple FLEX Method for your group: (1) Find a topic, (2) Learn about it on your own, (3) Explore it together on the phone call. Coming to the conversation with your thoughts and questions developed is what makes mentoring over the phone possible.
Discussion Questions:
- Watch the video together or invite someone to summarize the topic.
- What is your initial reaction to this video? Do you disagree with any of it? What jumped out at you?
- Do you think a 30- or 60-minute phone call would be beneficial for the person you’re mentoring? Why or why not? What are the advantages of mentoring over the phone? What are the disadvantages?
- Describe the FLEX method. How can this method take pressure off of you as a mentor?
- How important is it that both people come to a mentoring session prepared for the conversation? Explain. (See the Mentoring Law of Discovery.)
- Write a personal action step based on this conversation.
