Psalm 121 was sung by the ancient Israelites as they made the long journey to Jerusalem. This journey was dangerous, and we see that reflected in the opening words of the psalm.
Psalm 121:1-2 I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
The Israelites faced tremendous dangers as they scaled the hills around Jerusalem to come to religious festivals. And their experience reminds us of some important truths.
Every Christian faces challenges.
It’s important to realize that every person will face challenges in their lives, especially Christians. Just because you follow God, it doesn’t mean that you will not face tough times in life. We all face challenges. For example, if you are a student, you might be having a difficult time with your parents, friends, or teachers right now. But the encouraging this is that God is here to help you through your challenges.
God helps every Christian in tough times.
Look again at what we read in verse 2. It says that our help comes from God. Who do you turn to in times of crisis? Maybe it’s a friend or your mom. That’s good, but understand that God is here to help you too.
Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
God watches over your life from beginning to end. And he wants to help you through life’s most difficult circumstances.
