The Bible teaches that there is only one God.

The best way to begin to understand the Trinity is to get a solid, biblical definition of the word. There are three parts to the definition of the Trinity, and in this topic we will examine the first part of the definition: There is one God.

It’s important to point out that the word Trinity is not found in the Bible, but the idea of the Trinity is found throughout the Bible.

The Oneness of God

The Bible clearly teaches that God is one.

Deuteronomy 6:4  Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Isaiah 44:6 I am the First and the Last; there is no other God.

Isaiah 44:8 You are my witnesses—is there any other God? No! There is no other Rock—not one!

The testimony of the Bible is that God is the only God. There is no other God anywhere in the universe. Think about it, God would know if he had any competitors. But God tells us that there is no one like him.

Why It Matters

The teaching that there is one God has some important implications for us.

  • There is only one creator who made humanity and the universe.
  • There is only one Lord over the entire universe. Anyone or anything else that claims to be Lord is false.
  • There is one God over history. From the beginning of humanity to the future end of the world, history is in the hands of one God. He started history and he is bringing it toward his desired end.
