Session #1

Key Points:

  • Jesus came to the earth to help people pursue God, and his strategy was to empower generations to do it.
  • Jesus picked fishermen instead of Pharisees to make a point: regular people can do this. Matthew 4:19
  • The crowds had sermons, but they needed shepherds to disciple them. Matthew 9:36-37
  • Making disciples is a command, not a suggestion. Matthew 28:19-20

Podcast:

Talk About It
  1. What is your initial reaction to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. What do you think of when you hear the word “mentoring?” Have you ever had a mentor at school, in sports, or at work? Describe the relationship.
  3. Read John 1:43. Is it surprising to you that Jesus picked a bunch of fishermen as his closest disciples? Explain.
  4. Make a list of the activities you consider to be “normal” in the Christian life. Is disciple-making on that list? Have you actually ever done it?
  5. Read Matthew 28:19-20. Do you think the disciples felt qualified to become mentors? Do you feel qualified? Why or why not?
  6. Who personally helped you to pursue God? How did they do it?
  7. Write a personal action step based on this conversation.

Session #2

Key Points:

  • Disciple-making is simply a series of conversations, and our content at pursueGOD.org empowers you to actually do it (see the FLEX Method).
  • The process of disciple-making involves three phases in the big picture: invite, invest, and empower.
  • When you start investing in a discipleship relationship using our tools, remember three core principles: discovery, ownership, and humility.
  • The pathway for discipleship gives you clarity on how to help someone go full circle. Start with topics (at the top of any Start Page) and work toward The Pursuit, a 12-week discipleship track that graduates your mentee.

Talk About It
  1. What’s your initial reaction to this topic?
  2. Invite, Invest, Empower – which one seems the most difficult to you? Explain.
  3. Describe the three mentoring principles in your own words. Which one resonates with you most?
  4. Read 1 Corinthians 3:7. How do you see this principle at work in your own story of faith?
  5. Describe the pathway for disciple-making in your own words. What’s the point to taking someone through a discipleship track?
  6. Do you feel qualified to make disciples? If not, what would qualify you?
  7. Make a list of a few people who might be interested in going through a discipleship track with you. Begin praying for those people.

  3. Read John 15:16. Do you think the disciples would have ever mobilized if Jesus hadn’t been so direct about it? Explain.
